Kay Thomas Community

Since our start in 1989, Henderson County – Habitat for Humanity has partnered with 73 families, in four separate communities:

  • Partner Drive near Jackson Park, our first effort included four homes
  • Grove Hills in East Flat Rock included eighteen homes
  • Kay Thomas Drive in Hendersonville included twelve homes
  • Highlander Woods which will include eighteen homes when completed in 2005.
  • The next development, Shuey Knolls, will commence in 2006 and will include up to 100 homes on 60 acres in a beautiful area of Edneyville. Initially we were building one or two homes each year, we are currently working towards a goal of twelve new homes each year.

A goal of Habitat for Humanity is to create community through building relationships and providing support systems for families in need of adequate housing. Building quality shelter for each family is important. But equally important is developing a safe, caring community where lives are nurtured and supported as they strive to grow and develop in an increasingly complex and competitive world. Our communities bring diverse families together with the common goal of bettering their lives. “Sweat equity” requires our partner families to work on their own and their neighbors’ houses, thus bonding begins even before moving in, and we have found a strong sense of community evolves.

Building multiple homes in one location has the added benefit of improving construction productivity. Initially, we were building one or two homes each year; we are currently working towards a goal of 12 new homes each year. Habitat for Humanity is an international Christian organization, supported by volunteers who have a deep commitment to building communities with residents who care about their children and surroundings.
